Refugee Learning Nest

Who We Are

The Refugee Learning Nest (the Nest) was established in March 2015 by seven members of the refugee community in Indonesia and with the support of Same Skies. The aim of the project is to improve the welfare of the refugee community through provision of various activities and informal learning. It is based on volunteer engagement and community involvement. Refugees from diverse backgrounds are welcome at the Nest to work in different fields and learn more. The Nest is a community-based project, therefore it belongs to people from all races, nationalities, religions and countries. We are happy to be transparent and work with all refugees, including children. The Nest works through the co-operation and support of our community to become a sustainable and lasting project.

Context

Refugees in Indonesia are from different countries such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Sudan, China, Pakistan and other countries. They are living in Indonesia because they face numerous forms of discrimination and lack of security and don’t have any safe place to live. After registration with UNHCR, people have to stay in Indonesia for a long in very difficult situations. One of the difficulties of refugees is a lack of education because refugees are not able to go to local schools. This is due to a number of barriers including the legal status of asylum seekers and refugees, language and culture.

The Nest is dedicated to decrease education problems for refugees in Indonesia and for this we need humanitarian assistance. Although all refugees are in vulnerable situations, we want to help ourselves and remain a sustainable solution for our community, especially in delivering the best quality of education that we can.

Values

Refugee learning Nest is actively working under principles to guide us. These are:
Principle 1: Non–Discrimination –We absolutely do not discriminate on any person based on the grounds of their ethnicity, religion, social status, gender, nationality or country.
Principle 2: Humanity- we are altruistic and we respect people, as equals who are all deserved of human rights.
Principle 3: Volunteerism- Our community is guided by dedicated people who accept the responsibility of delivering humanitarianism to fellow human beings. We volunteer because we care about humanity.
